Description

I have been struggling for 6 months to use photos I took of a one-armed crab I found on the beach. He went nuclear-stinky and I had to biohazard his carcass, but I managed to get a few photos before the end. The 'eyes' are ultra-heated sodium lamps from a machine at my work. The tiny spheres are actual sea monkey (brine shrimp) eggs, and everything else is hand-painted.

I would say you have a beautiful mind...but you don't! It's twisted! Great images again. You should make a film with all these creatures. The headlight eyes are great.

Hey everybody, Keith called me God!!
Thanks, buds, for the undeserved support
a Note to the SPCA: the seamonkeys in the above photo all hatched successfully, but died within hours due to no fault of my own. OK, it was a little my fault........OK, IT WAS COMPLETELY MY FAULT.
*mumbles something about the price of sea monkey fame and the heat of studio lighting*
-----------And THIS is why I don't speak more on GFX - I ramble like a feral child!!

" I have been struggling for 6 months to use photos I took of a one-armed crab I found on the beach" - Sorry to say my friend that it shows...

I couldn't really put my finger on it but something HUGE here was missing. Sure the photos are good and the painting you did is good... the idea is cute, not completely done. But the composition, is nonexistant. A totally different composition should do, just trash the side-ways viewpoint altogether and go for something dynamic with lighting.

starqueen:
It sounds like you put your finger on it precisely. I am admittedly lacking in any formal art education, and am disappointed that my compositional choices distracted from your enjoyment of the photomanipulation.
I did my best to infuse the work with dynamism and story, obviously I fell short of what you were looking for. I am, however, confused with your suggestion regarding lighting. Are you suggesting that the work is too dark, or that the positioning or quality of the light sources is unappealing?

Avatar starqueen

 09/14/05 @636

:) ... well, the lighting is a little boring and unrealistic. if there's a true black behind the guy above then you wouldn't be able to see him that well with just the lighting under the water. actually, there wouldn't be that much light in the water with just the headlights on either. there isn't any depth in space on the z axis - using lighting in a different composition can help create that depth as well create a better composition overall.

: OK, like I said previously, I didn't have an unlimited number of photographs of poses and lighting conditions available, the specimen was destroyed, and I did the best with what I had. Sorry you didn't dig it. :(
BTW, there was a strong light source coming from the bottom up on diagonal, the beams of the'headlights' were the only lighting I actually added.
Thanks for your critique.

I actually think the composition is quite nice. There's a story in there somewhere. I think though it's cropped too close on the right side. A little more room overall but especially on the right would help, I think.
