It's that time again, time for this months elite member nominee's. We've had some cool artists join over the past month which is always a good sign. So everyone go and take a propper look around the gallerys of the nominee's and get voting, choose wisely. Good luck to everyone nominated this month!

It practically feels like the elite system has become turn-based...

"Hey, it's so-and-so's turn to be elite this month..."

Could we get the title changed from "Elite Nominations" to "Elite Campaign"?

3D should get a chance.

Avatar Wysiwyg

 02/02/06 @502

all catagories have an equal chance...it's up to the members to
1. Submit 3-d, design, manip etc...
2. Members to show support for those works...

Members decide who get's nominated...not the 'machine.'

So if it's anyone holding back 3-D it's the members....

Avatar ceph

 02/02/06 @632

from the looks of it, as far as artists are concerned, the amount of art in other categories far outweigh the number of 3d submissions. so until that matches the amount of other types of submissions (if it will ever), 3d has no chance. looks to be the same for a couple of other categories. =/

Avatar Byonder

 02/02/06 @651

It's a piece of cake to get nominated. All you have to do is submit 2 pieces a day for one month and even if each piece only gets 10 points you'll still get nominated. Some people do it every month...hurrah for quantity.

why do these elite nominations make me sad? I think it's a good thing to have elite nominations and elite members. It's a nice way to have your work appreciated, nothing more, nothing less. If a member becomes an elite, but doesn't take part in the community (never comments on other peoples work) then that's too bad, but does that make one a bad artist? It would be nice if there were more members who regularly took the time to take a look at other peoples work, you can learn a lot from from that!
I agree it's perhaps a piece of cake to get nominated, but as long as everyone votes for the artist who submits the highest quality (in more than one sense of the word) artworks (in your opinion)....then there shouldn't be a problem.

Heres a link that may interest some people: http://www.cgsociety.org/

Honestly I'm getting sick of reading all this moaning, we don't own this site, most members don't even subscibe to support it. What gives us the right to constantly moan about it? We have no rights here, this is not a public space, we just visit.

Are the elite nominations such important events in your lives?

Martin knows all of this already yes?so why do we have to read this all over again? Theres a very simple solution, if you think this place is insulting to the point of consistantly moaning about the same things: go elsewhere.

This isn't directed at any one person, just think yourselves lucky this site exists in the first place, the owners could very well decide enough is enough, these people are ungrateful, and shut it down.

As I said, the owners do realise the current system isn't perfect, why retred old ground like a nagging old wound? am I right?

That's nice Juro. Fact is that people will keep complaining until a. something happens or b. they leave.

The problem really arises when everyone who is nominated in a certain category did it through the "quantity" route as opposed to the "quality" route. This has happened a few times, one only a few months ago, where every artist in a certain category was "below-average" (yes, a subjective term, but it was more-or-less the general opinion). But one of them still won elite by default. I'm hoping the heralded "new system" will be able to change this, but it's still disappointing to see categories where the people seem to be in them by default.

Read what Juro wrote.

Especially the part about this being an essentially free service...a privilage. The owners of this site wouldn't lose any money/sleep if this place disappeared, but they keep it going for the members. Members who just bitch and moan, and even funnier, try to dictate what is within the guidelines as they feel their work is acceptable b/c they said so.

If everyone hated this current system, there would be 0 votes in every catagory. But there isn't...b/c somebody still has this title to mean they have acheived something. All elite does nowadays is hold you to a higher standard...and limit the amount of work you can submit, and limit your exposure...it's not a blessing.

The quantity over quality is a MAJOR issue...and it's being addressed. But as the owners need to create these new systems, test them, and then find a way to reconstruct a 4+ year old site around them. No one understands what will be affected if the scoring system is changed. G-Spot...gone...Top 10...gone...Highest Rated works....gone...and those works that have stood the test of time as being the best at GFX will fall in the same catagory as those who just got submitted today. There is a new system in the works to highlight a particular work, not the artist. Either be patient or leave...simple. DA and CGTalk can supply you will all the oohs and ahhh's nice work comments to your heart's content.

Everyone clamored for a year for the new review system...and no one uses it...it's disgusting.

@Ceph, other catagories submission numbers have no bearing on 3-d's chances for nomination. Re-read what I said about that.

Hey all, I'm relatively new here, but I have wandered through this site extensively, so I've seen much of what is being talked about here. I'm not as active in this community as I'd like to be (time restraints), but I'd like to take this opportunity to say that I enjoy this site. I try and frequent the site once a day to at least vote on some work and if I have time comment or even review. I'm sure whatever system is implemented will be well thought out and with what is best for GFX in mind, although I don't think you'll ever get rid of the bitching and moaning. They'll find something to bitch about no matter what system. Just wanted to let the owners know, that there is no bitchin here. This site gives me a means to improve my work and a concensus on what people think of it. Better then most other sites like this one. What more could you ask for from a free service like this?

Avatar Byonder

I think there could be a relatively simple (and easily implemented) fix.

Keep the "elite" system, keep the top-ten, keep the g-spot and the pic of the day. All that really needs to be done is to change the title from "elite" to "most popular."

There is no question that "most popular" is exactly that the "elites" are, but it would serve to remove the overtone of super-artistic-skill which is currently associated with "elite." It almost seems like people are striving so hard to get "elite" because they feel like if they can attain it (though any means possible - many times the popularity route) it will make them a better artist. But we all know it won't, because it's only a title...but some people idolize it anyway.

I've been suggesting this change for months...really that's the only thing I'd like to see changed in the immediate future. It'd be relatively simple compared to overhauling the entire system. I don't really think the current system needs to be abolished, and I don't really think there will be any way around the popularity-contest aspect of the site no matter how the system is changed, unless it's completely monitored and taken out of the member's hands (which I do not think would be a good idea).

@Wysiwyg, thanks for clearing that up. I figured the same reason applied to the 3D category as it does the Photo Manipulation, or Design categories that haven't placed for elite nomination. So it's just the 3D members that are doing it wrong? Anyway, I'm not here to complain or to fight. I submit work and I surf the galleries, maybe not as regularly as some, but I enjoy the time I spend on this site too. I have no idea of the history of the site nor do I claim to know how it's run. I look forward to a point in time when 3D (and those other categories too) catches up with the rest of the site. (thumbup)

One way to avoid that artists that post many works and because of that get nominated.....would be to take in acount only the best 10 works of the artist during the month......I am saying 10 just to mention a number....could be a little less or more.....that would give an oportunity to those artists that post good quality works but don`t post very often.....
Carlos

PS
And I don`t think that would significantly decrease the number of artworks posted....because the artist does not know in advance wich artwork will get the best rating.....but it may help to decrease the pressure on the artist, that now may feel forced to post everyday to acumulate points....

Avatar zanzibar

 02/08/06 @458

yes, this is a good ideea Carlos...
For example only artworks that have points above 100-150 points could be counted for the elite nomination. In this case a large amount of pictures that are not scored high would not help to be nominated.
