Gay activist seeks video game ban.

The game's makers say players can choose not to kill

A Dutch gay rights campaigner is seeking a ban on a computer game in which players can shoot a variety of individuals, including homosexuals.
Henk Krol, who is also editor of the leading Dutch gay newspaper Gay Krant, has asked prosecutors to prevent the game, Postal 2, from going on sale in Dutch toyshops in March.

It's definitely not anti-gay - you know what? it's a game - get over it

Vince Desi
software company chief executive

Mr Krol described the game as "disgusting" and said he hoped to make potential buyers aware of its content.

But the chief executive of Running with Scissors, the Arizona-based software company which produced Postal 2, said that while players could shoot gays, they did not have to and could not gain any advantage by doing so.

"It's definitely not anti-gay," Vince Desi told Reuters news agency. "You know what? It's a game - get over it."

Passive or aggressive?

Postal 2 is a new version of the earlier game Postal, which has been banned in Australia but is widely sold in the Netherlands.

In Postal 2, the player is a character called Postal Dude, who lives in a town with a wide variety of people of different race, build and sexuality.

Running with Scissors officials say the player can choose an active or passive role.

A lot of these games are being bought by parents and grandparents and one of our goals is to get people to understand what they were buying

Henk Krol
campaigner

"The real point is that you can play the game at either extreme, totally passive or completely aggressive, or anywhere in between, and the game will react appropriately," says RWS president Mike Riedel in explanatory notes on the game's website.

Mr Krol said that while he did not think it possible to stop people buying the game from the website, his campaign would at least make them aware of what was involved.

"A lot of these games are being bought by parents and grandparents and one of our goals is to get people to understand what they were buying," he said.

It may be a video game, but that doesn't mean it can afford to play around with discriminations. I'm all for its banning.

This is the most absurd thing I've read in quite some time. So, this Dutch guy wants you to only be able to shoot straight people? People are so quick to scream “discrimination today. It’s sick. This guy should try and focus on changing things in real life, rather than going around and looking for stupid things to change in the video game world.

I totally agree with Byonder, i mean in "carmageddon" i could run over puppies and squash people and that was my choice, others preferred to play the game by winning the races, its all personal opinion and i hate people that try to ban or protest against our right to choose and make choices in life. What gives them the divine right to stop me playn this game? If it was in real life sure i could see the point, gay people are cool and we shouldnt go round killing them, but its a game for cryn out loud !!!

to the two comment above me, ok, you say some thing like "you are only able to shoot straight people" well straight people are honestly the "reg" peple like you and i but when a gay person is intensionally pointed out and given the steriotypical look or sound, thats what i'd think pissed them off. especially when its in a game where it might not be for smaller kids but smaller kids are the ones that are gonna get their hands on a game like that.... we learn from games tv and everyday things this is just another juge factor thats contibuting to the discrimination of race, sexual preferance and everything..... i dunno... but then again, some people take things too personal.?

the "shoot only straight people" comment isnt far off though. seriously. People DO scream "discrimination" VERY quick today. Sticking to just gay people, they have a "gay pride" parade, and everything is all fine. Do you honestly think they will allow people to have a "Straight Pride" parade without thinking its something against them? Its the same with a lot of things. such as certain words black people say to each other (not stating it on the site) if a white person, or any other type of person says it to them, its discrimination, if race has nothing to do with it then why is it accepted by their own color, but not by others?

race or sexuality plays a major role in everyones life today, specifically to avoid lawsuits against them for saying anything that may remotely offend someone. It would be funny to see a straight person sue a gay person for discriminating against them wouldnt it? Why? because it never happens.

btw, no im not racist or anything against gay people. to each their own. but do i agree with it? no. gives me no reason to tell them how to live their life though. I just think the whole discrimination stuff has gotten out of hand whenever someone farts in another race's general direction.

I totally agree with Byonder, Finch, and mrunknown. Gays want to be treated like every other person and accepted in society. And yeah their even give "special" priveleges that I as a regular persone don't get. If they expect us to treat them equally then they shouldn't complain about being shot at along with everyone else (within the game that is). Being gay doesn't make these people special, at least no in a good way, and they definitely don't deserve any special priveleges. That's my opinion anyway.

this is freakin ridiculous. I cant stand these people who try to ban things that they dont agree with. Get over it. They act like they goal of the game is to kill all the gays. Hey, Lotension I totally agree with you.

The easiest solution to this is to get people to check whether games are offensive while they're developing it. I blogged about GLBT resources today so hopefully problems are dealt with before ship!
