What has been going on below the surface of GFXartist

GFXartist is like a big ocean with tides. Tides of copyright and rule violation. I'd like to use this occasion to shine a light on what's been going on beneath the surface of GFXartist the past few weeks. We've suspended serveral accounts due to copyright violation and the stealing of artworks. One account has been suspended due to harassing a member and abuse of the GFXartist communication channels. A couple of members have been banned because of vote fraud and vote accounts. Just recently an account was suspended due to the violation of the 'illegal software' forum rule.

We try to be flexible when it comes to violations and we indeed are flexible in most of the independent cases. At some point action is the the only remedy though. It's quite easy to prevent this, read the FAQ and revive your common sense. Most of the members have and that's what makes this a great place.

An extended vote statistic functionality is available for the admins which makes it a lot easier to track voting behavior, the report function is being used by our members frequently (greatly appreciated) which points us in the direction of violations. Never the less, a lot of rules are broken because those involved are simply not aware of the rules.

I'll redefine the FAQ soon and try to find some more prominent places to link to it. If you have any suggestions as to where a link to the FAQ or rules would be usefull, don't hesitate to comment.

I can't stress it enough though, read through the FAQ, especially when it comes to copyright violations. You might be breaking them without even knowing. And remember this: be honest and be clear, especially in your artwork descriptions. Trust me it will save you from a lot of trouble and negative responses.

How about putting the link on the General tab, right before "general news", in bold. I only suggest it because it would put it:
A) on the screen when you first reach GFX and
B) right under your name, which I'm guessing most members click on at least a few times per visit.

You might also want to consider calling it "FAQ and Rules"

It is great the this issue has been acted upon.

I have some short comments and suggetions for improvement:
*) Rules should not be in the FAQ, they should have a section of its own.
Its howerver good to have a link from the FAQ to the rules.
*) Maybe it should be diffrent ruleset for publiching picutures and writing in forums
(The reason is that the rules can be made simplers)
*) A link to the applicable rules could/should be placed next to the submitt button.
*) The rules should be strait and simple. For two reasons.
o) Easier for people to understand.
o) Simple rules make simple judgements for Admin.
*) Better to have one rule extra than one to few, its easier to remove a rule
than to state a new one.

We also have the legal issue, the Admin/owner of the site is responsible for
making sure that laws are applied to. If I'm not misstaken it's the law in the country
where the server is situated that applies to the server, since laws tend to differ
from one country to another.

This is a very hard issue to deal with.
From my experience it is better to have harder rules, and act upon
violation at once. The is mainly due to the fact that if you let someone
step over the line it tend to be common use, guess it's in the human nature ;)

Hope I have not stepped on to many toes now.

Absolutely not, I'll take your suggestions in account when revamping the FAQ/rules. Cheers.

NOt that I plan on doing so, but my limited imagination can't figure out a way that some people can abuse the voting system. Waht like they make it so they can do multiple votes per artwork?

We've just blocked 12 accounts that were all registered to one IP. These accounts are mostly used to vote on own artwork.

heh, after a new person signs up to GFXartist, it should take them to a page that just has the words "FAQ" dead center, with like a font size of 300... that should catch some attention. :)

Is there any way you can automatically deny those who register multiple accounts to one IP?

300? nahh.. still not big enough.. even if it was in bold, double underlined and blinking. ;-)

Silly to have someone even try to cheat on this website. What's to gain from it? nothing at all pretty much. Probably artwork that will never even land them a job doing it for a living anyways. So multiple votes on their own artwork is just plain stupid. This place is just a good hearted community where people share and show off their works. Stupidity must have engulfed them to even try and abuse the system.

As for the legal copyrights, I think it would be helpful to look up and post copyright law links or state it on the website (in the Rules Faq)...or somewhere so people can read it and understand it. Sometimes people just don't have any understanding of it at all.

emarts: no not really since some people live in the same house or share an internet connection.

The IP addresses do work magic in combination with our extended vote statistics function though. It has become a lot easier to track multiple accounts.

1- Welll.. In all elections, in all communities around the world, there´s always and always will be, someone tryng to make the things easier. So I don´t see how this kind of thing should not accour here. You, adm. guys, must be well prepared for that!

2- About the rules, there is a simple way, make the new member pass by 2,3 or 4 windows with the rules before subting at the site.

3- I´m new around here, and I would like to say that you guys are really doing a great job. THIS IS A WOUDERFUL SITE, and very well done.
