Thank you for the clarification. That puts my mind much more at ease. Now i just have to hope that my entries are some of those that were previously missed in your web broswing. I knew i should have scraped together the time to do something new instead of refining my old stuff. *sigh*

Listen everyone, my partners and I are the final say on images. That's the clarification. We have a judging team of 6 men and women who will be viewing all the work after the contest entry date closes. I was unaware of the image vote transfer, so rest assured ALL images will be looked at and all art will be considered. We are not looking at the top 10 or 100 or whatever based on the votes or comments. We will be looking over every entry with a fine tooth comb.

So please don't worry about being missed or dissed, everyone will get viewed if the image is in the contest area.

Once again I'd like to state that this is the first contest that we've had and the road will be rocky, but it will all work out. Maybe Dave can figure a way to reset votes or something if it's driving everyone crazy, but as far as I'm concerned the poularity contest has nothing to do with the design contest, if it did everyone would already be signed.

For the past 5 months I've looked at every piece of art on GFX, Epilogue, Digital Art etc. If I loved your piece I contacted you.
This contest I tried to make design specific Faeries, Angels, Mermaid & Goddess (+ misc), images of the past were added as a consolation to the contest duration (short time frame). What we are looking for truly is new art designed for those categories. Most of the old art we've seen here and there. I'm not saying that it will not be chosen because I have seen a few great images that I missed in my online viewing experience, but if it's an image that's been posted in a gallery online from Jan. 2002- June 2003, there a really good chance that we've seen it and it wasn't right for us at the time.

Now all that confusion being said, please take into consideration a few things:

1- What wasn't right then may be perfect now.
2- If it's old and you posted it we may have missed it.
3- We are looking for many new styles this year.
4- This line is for a different class of trade.
5- This line is for a more limited age group 12-17 & 18-35ish
6- This line is for women.
7- We don't discriminate because of votes or comments
8- One man's trash is another man's treasure (in this case woman's)
9- Don't be stressed and enjoy yourselves.
10- If it isn't fun it isn't worth it.

Good Luck-

Judging: Also, some people, myself included, have moved existing art work from its old category into the Mythical Women category. Those old images have votes from months ago on them. It doesn't seem fair for those old votes to count in the judging process against brand spanking new images that haven't gotten much exposure yet.

Do you guys have any clarifications on the judging process yet?

I assume that the "midnight" deadline means that you have to enter before the 15th, so to speak, not before the 14th? That is, you get to work on your painting during the 14th? Or am I wrong?

Another question about the judging. On the initial judging done by the online community, will this be via the existing "vote" system already in place? And, if it is based on the voting system, how much will those votes count towards the final judging? If, for instance, an image gets very few votes, does that mean it's out of the running for the final judging? I ask because I have noticed that some images are getting 40-50 votes while others only get about 10. Seems rather unfair if that's how it's going to work for that part.

Martin- no.

nerf- you'll have to ask Dave about the seeing art as it's entered thing.
Judging: 8. JUDGING ~ Initial Judging will be done by the online community. Final judging will be done by Tee Shirt Industry Professionals (me and my partners).  Judging will be based upon creativity, visual storytelling, salability, illustrative style, and overall originality and attention to detail.  Please keep this in mind when you design, this is for a product that will be sold to tens of thousands of people (worldwide) so the appeal to the general public must be overwhelming.  Designs that are not easily understood, or do not tell a simple visual story that someone can understand in a moment (walking by), are not what this contest is about.  Please look over the samples provided on the website so you can get into the mindset of tee-shirt design.Â

And I don't know about the navigation either, that's a gfx thing.

Thank you, Michael and Dave for these clarifications. over the past 15 years, from the movie industry to Art galleries and publishers, I've been through so many agreements and contracts with suspicious or twisted wording that I always get extremely cautious about where I put my signature.

Good question...

It is a safety measure for publishing our agreement is all. An agreement is between the artist and our company, not the whole world and our company. It isn't cheap to make a contract (a good one) and the lawyers get a lot of $ for it.
The release is a pre-agreement that lets the artist know we are going to want to publish their work. That's what the contest is about, getting published on a shirt, exposure and making money. Christophe or anyone for that matter if you feel the need to discuss it before hitting the button please email me. I just need verification (portfolio on gfx or your website) that you are an artist and not another company in the industry that wants our contract.

It's pretty much exactly what Dave said, I wish I read that first . You regain full rights and © to the image at all times, even under agreement with us. The licensing agreement is for shirts only. Our sister company is Tree-Free a greeting card company and all winning artists will be offered an agreement with them as well. So it works out double for the artist.

I'm excited that you'll be entering (hopefully) your work is so magical.

Hi Christophe, the wording probably needs some work. I will have Michael, the art Director of The Mountain clarify this point. As I understand it, the 'release' merely states that you agree to the rules and regulations governing the contest. At this point, you are not signing over any rights, and have not entered into any sort of contract, besides saying you are open to the opportunity to enter into a licening agreement with The Mountain. If your work is chosen as a winner, the licensing agreement will be presented to you. The reason it is not published publicly is because it is a business agreement and The Mountain would like to keep it private.

oh, by the way, it'd be great to have you enter!

I have a question regarding the agreement with The Mountain: from what I read in the rules of competition, it seems that the agreement is going to be made available to any artist only after release has been agreed to. In other words -assuming that every artist hopes to see their work win- it would mean that we agree to a contract before we can see it. Which means that if there are some terms in the contract we don't agree with when we finally have access to it, it will be too late, because we will already have signed release agreement.
Am I correct?

Hey guys, we will be setting up a category in the standard artwork submission area. In order to preserve some sort of secrecy behind the entries, contestants will be able to upload their works during a certain time period, probably a week before the deadline.

You are "allowed" to do whatever you wish, the miscellaneous is just a way to
include images that don't fall into the other 4 categories (faery, mermaid, goddess and angel). Misc. could be Elves, Priestess, Witches, Paegan Imagery, Tree Spirits, Spirits in general, Goth Women, Celtic, Anime, women of power etc. Actually a Vampire "Goddess" should be entered in the "Goddess" category if she is indeed a goddess.

The main thing to keep in mind when designing, is the public (the end buyer of the T-shirt). The majority of people buying shirts are not into hardcore imagery. That’s such a small percentage of the marketplace and not really our market at all. Our customer is Middle America, and middle America wants nice simple non-offensive (no nudity, death, blatant sexuality or black magic etc.). I’m not saying there isn’t a market for that imagery, because I know there is, I’m just saying that market is not ours and if you design for that market there is a good chance that your image will not be chosen as a finalist.

I want to make a fine distinction here, this is contest is about illustration and not art. Illustration is where you get paid doing something for someone else. Art is what you do for you, that you love and you don't care if anyone else likes it because it's about you and not them. Making that distinction is a key factor here, I don’t want to scare anyone off but it is about selling your “work and not about selling what you love.

I hope that gives you a bit of a better understanding.

Something that didn't show up in the initial rules and guidelines is that prepackaged poser models will not be allowed geck. If an artist uses Poser they need to make their own skins. On a side note to that... the majority of the Poser art I look at is horrible. Same model different outfit. There are only a few Poser artists whose work is great and original and of those only one or 2 that I would ever approach.
Most Poser pictures are so sterile and stiff (99%) and those that aren't are done by true artists that know that post work is what makes an image great. Here I go making the Poser community mad I'm sure, but it's really like any group of artists,
there are 10,000 (insert any number here) 1% of whom are great and 1% of that 1% we are compatible with.

Geck, some work is fine the way it is some needs to be manipulated for better salability, that just the way it is. If you don't work on layers, it's fine most artists
don't. Artist's painting on canvases (most of the images I work with) don't have the layer luxury. We focus on character, and as bm666 says it is so the background can be easily mixed with the shirt. It was just a request (to make my life a bit easier) not a demand or even a requirement.

This is the first time I've done a contest, so the guidelines or rules may be weird.
The only thing you have to worry about truly is if you are working digital, work LARGE. The rest is just mumbo jumbo.
