Rules regarding the coloring of other peoples drawings

Lately we have encountered a lot of artworks in the gallery that are drawn by someone (for instance Feng Zhu or Joe Madureira) and colored by one of our members. I feel I should take you through the rules again when it comes to using other peoples artwork.

  • First of all, no matter what your intention is, you can't use work of an author unless he or she has given you permission to use it. Just because you found it somewhere on the web doesn't mean you can take it and do anything to it you want.
  • Want to practice your coloring skills? Fine, use any sketch or drawing you like. But before you publish this colored artwork and spread it over the web, contact the author and show him the colored version of his work. Never expose your color work to a large amount of people if you don't have permission of the author of the sketch/drawing.
  • Adding color to someones lineart/drawing/sketche doesn't necessarily makes it better or more beautiful, a poorly colored sketch will reflect on the original author. Keep this in mind when you decide to color the work of a respected artist.
  • If you have permission of the original author and you publish the colored drawing online, be honest. Give the original author the proper credit, if he has a site provide a link to it. Also provide a link to the original sketch/drawing, it puts things in perspective.

From now on, it is not allowed to add artwork to the gallery that you've colored if you don't have permission of the original author. If this seems unfair, do use the comments to tell us why.

Don't get me wrong, this rule also applies to the other types of art. Never use artwork of another artists without permission. If you add an artwork to the member gallery that contains art by other, give them the proper credit and show the viewers which piece of art you used. People often don't like to give credit to someone for work he didn't do.

The FAQ "Rules and guidelines for adding artwork" has been updated.
