System Update: Where did all my stuff go?

How do I upload my artworks now? Where can I see an overview of my art with the amount of comments/votes. It's all in the new artwork management section. With the updated galleries we're also giving the artwork management/submission area an update. Everyone now has a My Artworks page from which you can handle all your artwork related actions. Though I can describe the page, you'd be better off having a look yourself.

The galleries have all been reformatted too. We now work with 6 main categories and a set of subcategories for browsing artwork. Soon we'll also update the category selection on the artwork submission page to help you find the right place for your art. The galleries might look a bit chaotic now because we had to migrate all the artwork. If you haven't allready I suggest you head to your My Artworks page and recategorize your works.

The elite gallery now uses the same system as the member gallery, except for a few minor differences. It's a bit emtpy now, but during the upcoming months we'll increase the amount of elite awarded members and the new gallery categories will contribute in a wider variaty of artists.

As for the categories. In short 3D Modelling is for all 3D renders. Painting is for all fully painted works, digital or traditional. Drawing is for line art, vector art cellshaded works, etc. Photography for all digital and traditional unmodified photo's (except for things like color correction). Photo manipulations is for all works that contain photographic material. Design is for posters, covers, ads and interactive work like web designs.

You'll undoubtfully have trouble finding a right category on occasion. But as it goes with categorizing you'll have to pick the one that covers your piece the best. Note that the subcategories are for easy browsing only. All art from one category will still be covered on the front page of that category in the top 10 and new submissions. Subcategories are defined to match the subject of your work, not the technique or medium.

Changes are never easy and with the current divided galleries it might take you some time to get into your new browsing habits but I am still convinced this will positively affect the overall experience. If you never the less think we missed something essential, feel free to give a shout.

Two explinations for my next comment: either
a) i'm blind
b) you took the feature out

- i want to view -all- the artworks that are new to me from -all- the sections, at once. Like the old gallerys were. the new system is great for people browsing with intent, but i want to see all the new stuff in one place. How do i do that now? (feel free to tell me i'm blind)

Well, Martin said a lot, but I wan't to add the following...

There are some features removed because they didn't work anymore in the new layout. Like the page which showed all new artworks you didn't vote on yet. This function will be returned somehow. We will make a search-page where you can make your own selections, some things allready work:

All new member artworks:
http://www.gfxartist.com/community/member_galleries/list/0?orderfield=2&order=2
All new elite artworks:
http://www.gfxartist.com/community/elite_galleries/list/0?orderfield=2&order=2

Looking good guys. Seems like this should definitely help out with the under-exposure complaint. We'll see how it works out ;) Keep it up!

Congrtulations, you did very well. I can't say how much I appreciate the improvements.

I had that idea, btw: Why not add some properties you could check when submitting a new artwork (like B&W/color, Traditionnal/Digital, Fantasy/Scifi/...). This would allow advanced searchs & selections...

I like the division of categories...it gives greater exposure to sections that are underdogs. Nice work, guys.

You say "Drawing" is for vector work, but it seems that this is not an appropriate name... I do not think "vector" when I think "drawing" ... there would seem to be no category specifically for vector work. Drawing makes me think of pencil and paper, really. Or a sketch, something like that. Hmmm.

Oops, looks like you took out fantasy/sci fi categories too... Most of my stuff is uncategorized. ._.

(I like changes, but they leave me feeling disoriented sometimes)

Hey, I think you should add the catagory "paint-over" to the list under "digital painting." :p eh heh...

As for the Drawing category. 'Illustration' seemed to mislead a lot of people so we defined it now as drawing, as opposed to painting. Vector illustrations resemble drawing more than painting so they go in the Drawing category.

As for subcategories. I'm confident that most artworks can find their place. We no longer seperate on genre or technique, simply on subject. Sci-fi and fantasy works also feature a character, or a building, or an animal/nature. Define the main subject and simply find the appropriate subcategory. The choice doesn't have to be spot on, but has to make sense.

i have to say that i dont like it. its 2 complicated now, i dont find a thing, and with my DSL connection the site is still slow.
Its OK that the work is now sorted by category, but u should at least leave the incoming gallery, best 10 gallery and elite gallery the way they were. Really.

I agree with this philosophy, but again I ask: WHY do Vehicles get their own subcategory? Vehicles are a kind of Technology. If they get their own subcat, so should Robots, and Weapons, and Fax Machines, and Electric Razors...ad nauseum.

Okay, so maybe not the last two :) .
