Ei-en's Departure

Before I start, this message is not meant to be a kick in the groin for Ei-en.
We've all seen his goodbye message appear a few days back in the forum. Since then it has sparked some intense discussions. Partially because some people know why he had to leave and some don't. Although we usually try to do these things discretely, it seems that right now this discretion is causing more trouble than necessary. So here's the scoop:

Quite a while ago a member was disqualified from the elite nominations due to the questionable originality of his works. Recently this member was again nominated as elite and this time became elite. However it seems his methods had not changed and soon proof was delivered that pieces of other artworks were used to construct some of his own. This was done without any permission, explanation or given credit.
Just days ago I confronted this member with the material and after a short talk (which not happens that often) he explaned to me he made some bad choices, apologised for them and assured me that some of his art was indeed completely original. However given the history and the fairly large amount of members who informed me I had no choice but to suspend the account. The least I could do was to let him say goodbye himself before closing his account.

Just another reminder that although borrowing material from other artists doesn't seem that bad, it is still a serious copyright violation. No matter what your history or status here is, we enforce our rules and suspend accounts. Ei-en is by no means an unskilled artist, but skill is just as important as respecting other peoples creations. I'm sure that with time he'll come to understand this and will turn out to be a fine artist.

Another discussion that branched from this issue is assigning the elite status to the runner up of elite nomination that produced Ei-en as elite.

[EDIT] Since the nomination in question was last month's, we'll discuss it with those involved and decide wether the runnerup will instead get the elite status.

Hum...ei-en showed me some process steps and I can assure it was done from 0
However, it's perfectly posible he had copied some other works.
Anyway, he is a great artist.

This particular artwork shown in the thumbnail is, according to him, one of the completely original works and a fine one indeed. Two other works however contained material from some well known artists.

Dissapointment is the word that comes to mind... I mean, if he actually did that "Deep Blue" work totally by himself, he did not need to violate any copyrights, but it seems he did and was not transparent about it.

It is always sad when these things happen. One should never take credit for other peoples art, even if it turns out quite good. Everyone should understand that. Still, ei-ei will always remind as a good artist to me.

mm ... you know everybody can make bad choices and errors...
of course I am desapointed...
but I love ei-en far away of this... I'm sure that with time he'll come to understand this and will turn out to be a fine artist
This is right... ;) good luck ei-en... and ei en is not leaving ONLY for thoose reasons but because of personal things really important (i have him on my contact msn he is a fine friend to me ...)

A day may come when ei-en will be the best ... then we'll all remember this story and have this great lesson of life...

I warned him since he joined DA.
Before he had done real rip off (ie. Agent44's artworks - falcoon's...)
I hope he will find the right way.
It's a shame he wanted to cheat on little things like that. Cuz himself has potential...

When he was disqualified the first time, how did he come up into nomination again?

I think he's a great artist, just a bit naive.

Sad - - - but I agree with Martin and the rest of the GFX team - - - the line has to be drawn somewhere.

One of the things that surprised me about ei-en was the rate at which he was churning out artwork - - - its like he was a living breathing one-person production line! The guy has skill - - - and in time, he will gain maturity.

Man, I leave the site for a week and look what happens...

Thanks for clearing things up, Martin.

Later..What is the sayin'? If your not cheatin' your not tryin'. Who knows. Some people never learn. If you get caught doing things like that in a real job or in school, Your life can be absolutly ruined. It takes a kick in the teeth sometimes to absorb a lesson. I hope this person learns a valuable lesson.

Having exchanged many IM conversations with ei-en I know what a good person as well as a talented artist he is. It is too bad he has made errors in judgements which have put him in this situation. The admin. are correct, rules must be followed and the consequences accepted. I'm sure he will eventually benefit from this as well. I wish him much luck in the future.

Sometimes walk its better than run, ei-en was dreaming always with the "gold icon" here, Perhaps blind, but he is very skilled, walking step by step, he will go far.

God bless his pixels, anywhere :p

Well, I'm glad that Ursula ended up getting the status, since she truly won when ei-en is removed from the picture. Both were equally deserving :)

just a question, lets suppose someone copies my work and later accuses me of copying his work, How do i defend myself, or prove otherwise.

Avatar Crow

when you post something to gfxartist.com, it's timestamped, you can that way prove that yours was first posted in internet. You can also take work in progress screenshots that proves you created it by yourself

Avatar Martin

 06/29/04 @323

Keep in mind though that our timestamp can have little meaning since we can in no way tell that the artwork you uploaded is actually yours. However, when it comes to chronological clash between who was first, our timestamp works but only if the artwork in question is uploaded to our server. A linked artwork can be changed from outside our system.

Well, it was a foolish mistake indeed, and for an artist who is not unskilled and knowing the rules of copy right laws, i give him no credit for any work he did for gfxartist.com. I dont care how good you are, if you do stuff like this, you should not be given anything. For instance a great artist i will not name him, but he submitted an artwork that was not his own for a final project at my school before we graduated. Turned out that they found out, and kicked him out of school. So in my view eventhough he was a friend, i agree with the school. If you get into this business than submit your own work because even though you are skilled you cant get lazy and think that a quick fix like this will get you by.

Anyways i love the fact that this site does not take any crap and this is a warning to every artist here, if you get lazy and use someone elses work, you will get the boot.

Now i have even more respect for this site for only putting honest work. Honest hard work.

Cheers

I agree but my only problem is that this should have been dealt with early enough that he wouldn't have been nominated for the second time (after being disqualified once before). It makes it a bit messy, don't you think?

Avatar oomphgirl16

 07/01/04 @977

what I find messy is that although he's been disqualified, he's still keeping his elite status! apparently, UrsulaV was not added instead of him, the total number of elite members going to 71..

Nightwolf

 07/01/04 @001

well yeah he should of not been nominated of anything, and i think that his status and his name should of been taken off a long time ago. But instead they keep him here for a trophy i guess. I dont think its necessary to have him stay on this forum anymore, and keep mentioning his name. It's really a shame! Its already said and done and now lets move on to the real artists and give them a chance to be an honest elite member of this site. This is getting a bit ridiculous to keep having this guy around this site. Get rid of him ones and for all! Take his elite award and give it to someone who really really deserves it. Is this not the reason why artists are members here? to get awards that they truely deserve and worked for? I mean if this site was a joke than every artist could take any art work from other sites, change some things or paint over it be an elite member. I believe this is just a shame and this member should be taken off immediately.

Cheers people..

Do not be mistaken, although an account exists it doesn't mean it is operational. But never the less you're right we should remove the account.

 07/11/04 @428

i don't know wholly about the situation, however i have spoken to ei-en (although not for a while) and from what i know, his works are genuine. Even down to showing me progress steps of his art as it was being made.
If there is any concern about deep blue, i made the planet in the background for him, and gave him full permission to use it.

I'm not familiar with how this place is run, however i'm not going to jump down anyones necks at the same time. This of course is just my point of view. What will be will be of course :)
