discreet releases 3dsmax 7 trial version

While surfing on discreet's corporate website I discovered they made a trial version of the latest 3dsmax version available for public download. 3dsmax 7 again contains some nice features such as modelling tools for skinning characters, even more performance and stability in the existing set of features, and a completely new toolkit for creating normal maps and to preview your work with directx 9 shaders directly in the viewport. Also discreet's awardwinning character animation product characterstudio is now completely integrated in the 3dsmax environment as a standard component.

Geez, 7?
I remember playing a bit with 2 and that 3 was released. But I never really liked 3D so.... How many years has it been since 3dsmax 2 came out?
