Simon Bisley Interview

As part of their Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse special, Gamespy has conducted an interview with legendary comic book artist Simon Bisley, talking with the British artist about his background in games, concepting characters, the typically dark and dire settings of his work, his process, and various other topics.

GameSpy: Do you think about light treatment or camera angles or posture when you do them? Or does it just come naturally?

Simon Bisley: No, I actually do think about that sometimes. I do have to think about that. Especially in this occasion when we are drawing some of the female characters. You've got to be conscious of that. My instincts are to draw everything as powerfully as I can. Make it look powerful! But then you've got to lay it back a bit and make the female form a bit more... vulnerable I guess. In certain situations. I almost over accentuate the characters to some degree. If it's powerful I make it really powerful. If it's weenie I make it very weenie. (laugh) I almost go over the top with that. But with this particular strip I've been trying to find a middle ground -- I'm not trying to go too over the top with things. I don't want to stylize things to the point where they become comical.

Yeah, you want to push things far enough that they get across easily but not so much that they are cartoony and silly.

Yeah! Yes, cause then it becomes a satire of itself and I'd like to take this more seriously. Cause that's the way that this story is. It's not a joke. I mean I find when I've worked on other jobs that I find a bit boring that I like to draw something in there just to keep me interested in it. Stupid stuff in there you know. (laughs) But this is enjoyable. I like it. I like the story and stuff.
