Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX unleashedNvidia has unleashed the followup to their 6800 series of videocards during the Geforcelan 2.0 LAN party which has been held in San Francisco last week. They have named it the 7800 GTX, and based it around their brand new G70 graphics processing architecture which shows a lot of similarities with the previously announced RSX graphics architecture they exclusively designed for Sony for use in the Playstation 3 console. New and improved features and a major speed bump With the G70 architecture Nvidia not only managed to make a huge leap ahead with processing speed (a single G70 based 7800 GTX videocard has about twice the amount of processing power of 2 NV40 based Geforce 6800 Ultra videocards in SLI mode) but they also managed to integrate a lot of shiny new features such as support for HD graphics (up to 1080i), realtime radiosity, improved antialiasing (using transparency supersampling), High Dynamic Range (HDR) effects with OpenEXR support and more. No paper launch this time around Nvidia even managed to avoid a so-called "paper launch" this time around, because renowned videocard builders such as XFX and BFG already produced and shipped enough videocards to computer shops which enabled them to sell G70 based videocards directly from stock immediately after the announcement. Looks like they learned something from the period around the launch of the Geforce 6 series in which customers needed to order and wait for several weeks to receive their new videocard simply because the demand was too high. What about ATI? What the answer of Nvidia's direct competitor ATI will be remains to be seen since the follow up to their R480 architecture, which has been called the R520, will be officially launched at the end of July and no official statements has been made about it's features yet. Also it is still unclear whether this will be a paper launch or if the cards will be immediately will be available through computer stores around the world. So, for the moment Nvidia has officially has taken over the lead in the computer enthousiast market from ATI but for how long remains to be seen... Further reading If you want to read more about the 7800 GTX videocard and want to see some actual benchmarks and read some more technical information nearly every renowned review site such as Anandtech, Hexus, nVNews, Beyond3D and Guru3D have published a review about this great new videocard.

Great speeds, but ridiculous prices.
Even if the price drops in time, it will still stay around 400 quid,
which is way to expensive; professional user or not.
